Glanville is a suburb located in the northwest of Adelaide, a major city in South Australia. It is part of the local government area called the City of Port Adelaide Enfield. Glanville is known for its close connection to the historic Port Adelaide area.

The Story of Glanville

Glanville has an interesting history that dates back to the mid-1800s. It was named after an important family.

How Glanville Got Its Name

In 1846, a person named Captain John Hart moved to an area near Port Adelaide. He bought a large piece of land there. In 1856, Captain Hart built his own house on this land. He decided to name his new home Glanville Hall. This name was a tribute to his mother, whose maiden name was Mary Glanville.

The large piece of land around his home became known as the Glanville Hall Estate.

Becoming a Suburb

Years later, a part of the Glanville Hall Estate was chosen to become a new suburb. The idea to name this new suburb Glanville was first suggested in 1945. Finally, in 1951, Glanville was officially recognized as a suburb. This means it has been a formal part of Adelaide for over 70 years!
