Exeter is a suburb located in Adelaide, Australia. It is about 14 km northwest of Adelaide's main city area. This suburb is found on the Lefevre Peninsula. It is part of the City of Port Adelaide Enfield.
Exeter is next to other suburbs like Semaphore, Birkenhead, Largs Bay, and Glanville. Most of Exeter is made up of homes where people live.

History of Exeter
The land where Exeter now stands was first bought by Phillip Levi in 1850. Later, John Lapthorne owned a part of this land. He divided it into smaller pieces. The name "Exeter" first appeared on official papers in 1882.
How Exeter Got Its Name
John Lapthorne was born in a town called Exeter in England. He sailed to South Australia in 1840. He died in Exeter, Adelaide, in 1889. The suburb was named after his hometown in England.
Early Buildings and Landmarks
An important early building in Exeter was the Lord Exmouth Hotel. William Knapman was the first person to run this hotel in 1859. The hotel's name also has a connection to England. It was named after Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth, who died near Exeter, England. William Knapman's wife, Charlotte, was also born near Exeter, England.
The Exeter post office opened in 1947. However, it closed down in 1986. There is a house on Denman Street that has a special blue plaque. This plaque shows it is listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. It used to be a store for a Cooperative Society.
Local Facilities
Exeter does not have its own primary school. The closest primary schools are Le Fevre Primary School in Birkenhead. There is also the Catholic Dominican Primary School in Semaphore. The local high school for students is Le Fevre High School. This school is located in nearby Semaphore South.
There are not many shops or businesses in Exeter itself. Most of the shopping areas are located east of the river in Port Adelaide.
Getting Around Exeter
Exeter is served by several bus routes. Bus routes 352 and 353 run along Woolnough Road and Hargrave Street. Bus routes 156 and 333 serve Causeway Road.
The suburb also has access to two train stations. These stations are on the Outer Harbor railway line. The Glanville railway station is just outside Exeter's eastern border. The Peterhead railway station is right on its eastern border.
How Exeter is Governed
Exeter is part of different government areas. For federal elections, it is in the Hindmarsh division. For state elections, it is in the Port Adelaide district. Locally, it is managed by the City of Port Adelaide Enfield. This means different levels of government help manage the area.
