Bungle, the Glass Cat is a special character from the magical land of Oz, created by the famous author L. Frank Baum. She is not a real cat, but an enchanted ornament made entirely of clear glass. This means you can see right through her! You can even see her bright pink brains and a shiny red heart inside her glass body.
Bungle is known for being very clever and sometimes a bit grumpy. She lives in the beautiful palace in the Emerald City as a special guest of Ozma of Oz, the ruler of Oz.
Who is Bungle the Glass Cat?
Bungle first appeared in the Oz books in 1913, in a story called The Patchwork Girl of Oz. She was brought to life by a powerful magic powder known as the Powder of Life. This amazing powder can make almost anything come alive, even a cat made of glass!
Because she is made of glass, Bungle is quite unique. She doesn't need to eat or drink like a normal cat. She also doesn't have fur, so she never needs to be brushed! Her clear body lets everyone see her thoughts and feelings, which can sometimes be a bit embarrassing for her.
Bungle's Adventures in Oz Books
Even though Bungle is not always the main hero, she has appeared in many Oz stories. Authors often enjoy including her because she is such a memorable character.
- In The Glass Cat of Oz (1997) by David Hulan, Bungle gets to be the main character and goes on her own big adventure.
- She also appears in The Blue Witch of Oz (2000), a graphic novel by Eric Shanower.
- Gina Wickwar featured Bungle in her book The Hidden Prince of Oz (2000).
- In Bungle of Oz (2013), a short novel, Bungle travels through different parts of Oz, like Gillikin Country and the Land of Ev. She meets other interesting Oz characters during her journey, such as Jinnicky the Red Jinn and Jellia Jamb.
Bungle in Cartoons
Bungle has also appeared in cartoons, bringing her glass charm to a wider audience.
- She is in an episode called "Welcome to the Bungle" from the cartoon series Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz. In this cartoon, Bungle acts more like a regular cat. For example, she chases a mouse around the Emerald City, which is something her book version wouldn't usually do!
