History of Glenbrook
Glenbrook is the oldest settlement around Lake Tahoe. It played a very important role when Nevada became a state. The town supplied a lot of wood for the Comstock Lode and Virginia City. These were famous mining towns.
The first settlers arrived in the valley in 1860. One of them, Captain Augustus W. Pray, built a sawmill in 1861. Sawmills cut down trees into lumber. Logs were floated down streams or carried by boats to the mills in Glenbrook.
By 1875, Glenbrook was a busy town. It had four sawmills, a store, a bowling alley, a billiard hall, and two hotels. However, after 1880, there was less logging work. The logging industry eventually stopped by the end of the century.
