Glenden is a town in Queensland, Australia. It's known as a mining town because many people who live there work at a nearby coal mine. Glenden is also a "locality," which means it's a specific area or place.

In 2021, about 477 people lived in Glenden. However, the number of people living there has been going down. This happened because the local mine changed its work schedule. Many residents are now moving to other towns like Proserpine for a more stable life.

Glenden's History

Glenden was built by a company called Mount Isa Mines (now known as Glencore). They created the town to provide homes for the people working at their Newlands coal mine. The company chose the town's location in 1981, about 30 kilometres from the mine.

After building the town, the company gave it to the local council to manage. This council was first called the Shire of Nebo, but it later became part of the Isaac Region in 2008.

Saving Glenden Town

In 2023, there was a big worry that Glenden might be knocked down. This was because when the mine was first approved, it was agreed that the area would be fully "rehabilitated" (returned to its original state) once the mine closed. This meant the town might have to go too.

Many people were upset about this plan, especially because there weren't enough homes available in Queensland. On August 18, 2023, the Queensland Premier (the leader of the state government), Annastacia Palaszczuk, announced good news. She said new laws would be made to stop the town from being demolished. This means Glenden will be saved!

People and Economy

The number of people living in Glenden has changed over the years.

• In 2011, there were 1,308 people.
• By 2016, the population was 620 people.
• In 2021, it was 477 people.

The main reason people live and work in Glenden is the mine. It's the biggest employer in the town. Outside the town, the land is mostly used for raising cattle on large farms called grazing stations.

Education in Glenden

Glenden State School is a school for all ages, from Prep (the first year of school) up to Year 12. Both boys and girls attend this school, which is located on Gillham Terrace.

In 2013, the school had 317 students. By 2018, the number of students was 91. The school has teachers and other staff who help students learn and grow.
