Glenroy John Gilbert (born August 31, 1967) is a Canadian former track and field athlete. He is famous for winning a gold medal in the 4 × 100 metres relay at the 1996 Summer Olympics. After his amazing career as an athlete, he became the head coach of Athletics Canada.

Early Life and College Years
Glenroy Gilbert was born in Trinidad & Tobago. In 1973, when he was six years old, he moved to Canada with his mother and five brothers and sisters.
He later attended Louisiana State University in the United States. There, he was a key member of the LSU Tigers track and field team. In 1993, his team won the NCAA 4 × 100 metres relay title. This was a big achievement for him in college sports.
Olympic and World Championship Success
Glenroy Gilbert first competed in the Olympic Games in 1988. He took part in the Long jump event. He also competed in the 1990 Commonwealth Games and the 1992 Summer Olympics.
In 1993, Gilbert won his first major medal. His Canadian 4 × 100 metres relay team earned a bronze medal at the 1993 World Championships in Athletics. This showed the world that Canada had a strong relay team.
Competing in Two Sports
Gilbert was a very versatile athlete. In 1994, he won a gold medal in the 4 × 100 metres relay at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. He also finished fifth in the 100 metres race.
What's even more amazing is that in the same year, he competed in bobsleigh at the 1994 Winter Olympics. He finished fifteenth in the two-man bobsled and eleventh in the four-man bobsled. This made him one of the few athletes to compete in both the Summer and Winter Olympics!
Golden Years in Track and Field
The year 1995 was very successful for Gilbert. He won a gold medal in the 100 metres race at the Pan American Games. He was also part of the Canadian 4 × 100 metres relay team that won gold at the 1995 World Championships in Athletics.
The biggest moment of his career came at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. In the 4 × 100 metres relay final, the Canadian team, with Gilbert as a member, beat the strong United States team. They won the gold medal, proving they were the best relay team in the world. Gilbert also reached the quarterfinals in the 100 metres race at these Olympics.
Gilbert and the Canadian team continued their winning streak. They won another gold medal at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics. They also won at the 1998 Goodwill Games. Gilbert's running career ended after the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Life After Athletics
After retiring from competitive running, Glenroy Gilbert did not leave the world of sports. He worked for a short time in radio in Ottawa.
He then became a coach for the Ottawa Lions Track & Field club. He focused on coaching sprinters and relay teams. Since 2006, he has worked with Athletics Canada. He mainly coached the Canadian men's and women's relay teams.
In July 2017, Gilbert was named the permanent head coach for Athletics Canada. He had already been chosen as the head coach for the world track and field championships that August.
Awards and Recognition
In 2008, Glenroy Gilbert was honored for his achievements. He was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. This recognition was for him and his teammates from the 1996 Summer Olympics 4 × 100 metres relay team.
