Glenroy John Gilbert, born on August 31, 1967, is a famous Canadian athlete. He used to compete in track and field events. He is best known for winning a gold medal in the 4×100 metres relay race at the 1996 Summer Olympics. After his amazing career as an athlete, he became the head coach for Athletics Canada.

Glenroy Gilbert's Athletic Journey

Glenroy was born in Trinidad & Tobago. In 1973, when he was young, he moved to Canada with his mother and five brothers and sisters.

University Sports

He joined the Louisiana State University track and field team. In 1993, he helped his team win the NCAA 4 × 100 metres relay title. This was a big achievement for him.

Early Olympic and Championship Appearances

Glenroy first competed in a major international event at the 1988 Summer Olympics. He took part in the Long jump and finished 21st. At the 1990 Commonwealth Games, he was eighth in the long jump. He also reached the semifinal with Canada's 4 × 100 m relay team at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Winning First Medals

Glenroy won his first medal at the 1993 World Championships in Athletics. The Canadian 4×100 m relay team finished in third place, earning a bronze medal. At the 1994 Commonwealth Games, Glenroy won a gold medal in the 4 × 100 m relay. He also finished fifth in the 100 m race.

Trying Bobsleigh

Interestingly, Glenroy also competed in bobsleigh at the 1994 Winter Olympics. He finished fifteenth in the two-man bobsled event. He also placed eleventh in the four-man bobsled event. This shows he was a versatile athlete!

Gold Medals in 1995

In 1995, Glenroy had a fantastic year. He won a gold medal in the 100 m race at the Pan-American Games. He was also a key member of the Canadian 4 × 100 m relay team that won a gold medal at the 1995 World Championships in Athletics.

Olympic Glory in Atlanta

At the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, Glenroy and the Canadian 4×100 m relay team were incredible. They beat the strong United States team by almost half a second. This win made them the best relay team in the world! Glenroy also reached the quarterfinals in the 100 m race.

Continuing Success and Retirement

Glenroy and the Canadian team won another gold medal at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics. They also won at the 1998 Goodwill Games. At the 1999 World Championships in Athletics, the Canadian team was disqualified in the semifinal. Glenroy ended his running career after the 2000 Summer Olympics, where the Canadians were eliminated in the semifinal.

Life After Athletics

After retiring from competitive running, Glenroy worked for a short time at CBC radio in Ottawa. He then became a coach for the Ottawa Lions Track & Field club. He focused on coaching sprinters and relay teams.

Since 2006, he has worked with Athletics Canada. He mainly coaches the Canadian men's and women's relay teams. In July 2017, he was officially named Athletics Canada's permanent head coach. He had already been chosen as head coach for the August 2017 world track and field championships.

Honours and Recognition

In 2008, Glenroy Gilbert was honored for his achievements. He was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. This was for his part in the amazing 1996 Summer Olympics 4x100 relay team.
