Gloria Scott's Music Journey
Early Career and First Songs
Gloria Scott's first song, "I Taught Him", was recorded in 1964. She was only 17! This song was created by Sly Stone, who was a very talented musician. Gloria sang with a group called the Tonettes. They sounded a bit like other popular girl groups of that time.
Gloria shared that Sly Stone really helped her get started. He took her "under his wing." She even performed at a big venue called the Cow Palace. Sly, his sister, and his cousin sang backup for her.
Joining The Ikettes
After her first song, Gloria became a member of The Ikettes. This was a famous singing group that performed with Tina Turner. Tina Turner herself mentioned Gloria in her autobiography. She said Gloria was a young club singer who joined the group.
Working with Barry White
Later, Gloria met the legendary Barry White. She signed a seven-year contract with him. Barry White produced her first album, What Am I Gonna Do, which came out in 1974. This album was one of the first released by Casablanca Records.
Even though the album was really good, it didn't become a huge hit. One music writer said it was a "gem" but "soon faded away."
A Hit Song and TV Appearances
However, one of Gloria's songs, "Just as Long as We're Together (In My Life There Will Never Be Another)", became very successful. It was also produced by Barry White. This song reached number 14 on the dance charts. It also hit number 16 on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart in 1975. The song was even played on the famous TV show Soul Train!
Despite her success with this song, Gloria's career didn't fully take off. Barry White became very famous, but Gloria's second album was never released.
Singing Backup and Later Performances
In the late 1970s, Gloria sang backup for Mary Wilson. Mary Wilson was a member of the legendary group the Supremes. Gloria also toured with Mary Wilson during this time.
Since 2008, Gloria Scott has performed every year at The Baltic Soul Weekender in Germany. She even released a song called "Help Me Get Off This Merry-Go-Round" with the Baltic Soul Orchestra.
In 2022, Gloria released her second album, titled So Wonderful.
