Plot Summary: Gnomes in Love
The story begins in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Here, two elderly neighbors, Miss Montague and Mr. Capulet, really dislike each other. When they leave their gardens, something magical happens. Their garden gnomes and other lawn decorations come to life!
The Feuding Gnome Families
The Montague garden is home to Blue-hatted gnomes, led by Lady Bluebury. The Capulet garden has Red-hatted gnomes, led by Lord Redbrick. Just like their owners, these two gnome families are always fighting.
Lady Bluebury's son, Gnomeo, is a Blue gnome. He often competes against Tybalt, a Red gnome. In one lawnmower race, Tybalt cheats and destroys Gnomeo's mower. Later that night, Gnomeo and his best friend, Benny, sneak into the Red garden. They want to get back at Tybalt by spray-painting his mower. But Benny accidentally sets off a security light.
A Secret Meeting
While escaping, Gnomeo bumps into Juliet in a nearby garden. She is Lord Redbrick's daughter and a Red gnome. She is trying to get a special orchid. They fight over the flower in a fun way. Soon, they realize they are from rival families. They quickly run away. Juliet tells her frog friend, Nanette, about her new love. Nanette promises to keep their secret.
Gnomeo and Juliet keep meeting secretly in the nearby garden. There, they meet Featherstone, a pink plastic flamingo. He encourages their love. Meanwhile, Lord Redbrick tries to set Juliet up with a Red gnome named Paris. Juliet isn't interested and distracts him with Nanette, who likes Paris.
Rising Tensions and a Tragic Mistake
The feud between the gnomes gets worse. The Reds sneak into the Blue garden and destroy a plant that Gnomeo's late father had cared for. The Blues want Gnomeo to get revenge. He almost sprays the Reds' prized tulips with bug spray. But Juliet sees him, and he stops the attack.
At their next secret meeting, Gnomeo and Juliet argue. Featherstone stops them. He tells them how he lost his own love when his owners broke up. Benny then sees Gnomeo and Juliet together. He runs into an alley, not knowing Tybalt is waiting with his lawnmower. Tybalt tries to run Benny over and cuts off his hat. Gnomeo steps in, and he and Tybalt fight. Tybalt's lawnmower crashes into a wall and breaks.
The Red gnomes think Gnomeo caused Tybalt's destruction. Gnomeo ends up in the road. A teapot falls from a truck, making everyone think Gnomeo was run over. Juliet is heartbroken. She tries to go into the road, but Lord Redbrick stops her. He then glues Juliet's feet to her tower to keep her safe.
The Truth and a New Threat
Gnomeo's mushroom friend, Shroom, finds out Gnomeo is still alive. A dog carried him to a park. Shroom and Featherstone find Gnomeo. Gnomeo climbs onto a statue of William Shakespeare. He tells Shakespeare his story. Shakespeare says Gnomeo's story is like his own Romeo and Juliet. He warns that it might have a sad ending too.
Back in the gardens, Benny uses Miss Montague's computer. He orders a powerful lawnmower called the Terrafirminator. He wants revenge on the Reds. The Terrafirminator arrives and starts destroying both gardens. It goes out of control while the gnomes are fighting a big war.
Gnomeo returns to Juliet with Featherstone's help. The Terrafirminator breaks free. Gnomeo cannot un-glue Juliet, who is stuck in the mower's path. They share a kiss as the lawnmower crashes into the tower and breaks itself.
Peace in the Garden
Lady Bluebury and Lord Redbrick finally realize how bad their fighting has been. They decide to end the feud. Gnomeo and Juliet appear from the ruins, safe and sound. Both gnome families celebrate their new peace. Miss Montague and Mr. Capulet come home to find their gardens a mess. They are very upset about the damage. But the Blue and Red gnomes work together to create a beautiful new garden. They celebrate their newfound friendship.
