The Adventure Begins
In June 1980, a teenager named Beth Easton moves to a small town called Wheaton, Washington. She moves there with her mother, Kate, after her father passed away. They live in Kate's aunt's farmhouse. Beth misses her old life in Los Angeles and doesn't like her new home at first.
Meeting a New Friend
In town, Beth meets Jody Salerno, a free-spirited teenager. Jody is known for being a bit wild. One day, Beth is riding her bike and accidentally crashes into a river. Jody is fishing there and helps her. Beth's mother tries to help her make friends with other local girls, Tracy and Samantha. But Beth soon finds herself drawn to Jody's adventurous spirit.
A Secret Plan
Beth and Jody quickly become good friends. Jody tells Beth about an adventure she has planned for the next day, which is the summer solstice. When Jody doesn't show up, a local police officer, Matt, gives Beth a ride to Jody's house. Jody's mother, Lynette, seems upset and unwell. She tells Beth that Jody is not home.
Matt takes Beth home, and she realizes he knows her mother. Soon, Jody calls Beth and tells her to meet her in the forest. Jody explains she was hiding because she had taken candy from the high school. Then, she shares a local legend with Beth. It's the story of Molly Morgan, a female miner. Molly supposedly died in a mine collapse on Bear Mountain while looking for gold.
Into the Mountain
The girls get into a motorized boat that Jody has hidden by the river. They ride downstream and into a cave inside the mountain. Jody has set up a small living space there. Jody tells Beth that she had a difficult situation with her mother's boyfriend, Ray, and ran away because she was scared. Beth tries to convince Jody to go to the police, but Jody wants to hide in the mountain.
As a rainstorm starts, the girls try to leave the cave. But rocks fall, damaging their boat and trapping Beth. Jody bravely swims out of the cave and down the river. She manages to get past a grizzly bear and reach a road. There, she finds a sheriff. Beth is rescued just in time as the water level inside the cave rises. At the hospital, Jody is surprised to find that Ray is alive.
The Search for Gold Continues
Beth's mother, Kate, doesn't want Beth to spend time with Jody. But Jody appears at a Fourth of July picnic. She shares her plan to go back to the mountain to find the gold. Kate eventually agrees to let Beth see Jody. The next day, they drive to Jody's house. Inside, they find Lynette looking very unwell, and Ray and Jody are gone.
Lynette is taken to the hospital. Beth tells Matt that they must go to the mountain, believing Ray took Jody there. Beth helps Matt find the caves, but they get separated inside. Beth finds Jody, who explains that Ray, who was not acting kindly, forced her to take him to find the gold.
The Mystery of Molly Morgan
Beth goes back to find Matt. Jody is grabbed from behind by someone she thinks is Ray. But when she turns, she sees an elderly woman who then disappears into the shadows. Ray appears and tries to grab Jody. Suddenly, the elderly woman hits him over the head with a shovel. Beth returns to find Jody and an unconscious Ray. The old woman, who might have been Molly Morgan, has vanished. Matt finally finds Beth and Jody, and Ray is arrested. Lynette recovers in the hospital, and Jody accepts her apologies.
A Golden Reward
In late August, Matt visits Beth's house. He brings Beth, Kate, Jody, and Lynette to the courthouse. An attorney is there, representing someone who wants to give a gift to the girls. They are given two bags, each filled with gold! The townspeople, including Tracy and Samantha, cheer and applaud them. It's a happy ending to their adventurous search for the secret of Bear Mountain.
