The Story of ghd

ghd was started in January 2001. The founders were Martin Penny, Gary Douglas, and Robert Powls. They worked together to buy the idea for a hair straightening iron. This idea came from an inventor in South Korea.

At first, ghd grew mostly by people telling their friends about it. This is called word of mouth. Two years later, they started their first advertisements. By then, hair salons had already bought £12 million worth of ghd products. This was much more than they expected!

In May 2004, ghd started selling its products in North America. This helped their sales grow to £37 million worldwide that year. Over the years, ghd was bought by different companies. In 2006, a company called Lloyds Development Capital bought ghd for £55 million. Then, in 2007, Montagu Private Equity bought it for £160 million.

In February 2013, another company, Lion Capital, bought ghd for about £300 million. By March 2013, ghd's sales were over £150 million. This was more than double their sales from 2007. They were selling over two million styling irons in 50,000 salons worldwide.

In 2016, a company called Coty bought ghd for around £420 million. The sale was finished in November 2016. Later, in 2020, Coty sold a part of its ownership in ghd to KKR. This deal also included other brands like Wella.
