Where is Gordon?
Gordon is located in Texas. The city covers about 1 square mile (2.5 square kilometers) of land. There is no water within the city limits.
Gordon's Story
Gordon's story began in 1864. Back then, a community called Hampton, Texas was founded nearby. The city of Gordon itself was planned in 1874. It was created by the Texas and Pacific Railway. They named the new town "Gordon" after the engineer who surveyed the land.
The railroad tracks were built through the area in 1880. The next year, Hampton moved to be closer to the railroad. The first classes at the Gordon School were held in 1882. The post office opened on October 17, 1883. Robert Rogan was the first postmaster.
Gordon High School was built in 1887. By 1889, Gordon had grown quite a bit. It had five general stores, three drug stores, and three hotels. There were also three cotton gins. About 300 people lived in Gordon at that time.
By 1901, Gordon had telephone service. The city got its own power plant in 1912. In 1920, the community had grown to 1,000 residents. However, the Great Depression caused a lot of hardship. By 1960, fewer than 500 people lived in Gordon. The city has continued to be a center for local ranching and oil production. In 2000, 451 people lived in Gordon.
