About Goro Miyazaki
Goro Miyazaki was born in Tokyo, Japan. His parents, Hayao Miyazaki and Akemi Ōta, were both animators. Growing up, Goro and his brother Keisuke saw many drawings from their parents' work. As a high school student, Goro felt he could not reach his father's skill level.
Instead, Goro chose to study landscape architecture. This field involves planning and designing outdoor spaces. After finishing his studies at Shinshu University, Goro worked as a consultant. He helped create parks and gardens. In 1998, he helped design the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka. He then became its director from 2001 to 2005. Goro is also a lead designer and director for Ghibli Park, which opened in 2022.
Goro's Animation Journey
Goro Miyazaki's first movie was Tales from Earthsea. This film was based on the Earthsea book series by Ursula K. Le Guin. Goro wrote the movie's story with Keiko Niwa. At first, Goro was just a consultant for the movie. But when he drew the storyboards, producer Toshio Suzuki decided Goro should direct the film.
Directing this movie caused some tension between Goro and his father. His father felt Goro did not have enough experience to direct a film. They reportedly did not speak much during the movie's creation. Despite this, Goro was determined to finish the project.
Tales from Earthsea was released on July 29, 2006. It received mixed reviews. However, the film was nominated for the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year in 2007. It was also shown at the 63rd Venice Film Festival.
In 2011, Miyazaki directed From Up on Poppy Hill. This movie was based on a 1980 manga comic. His father, Hayao Miyazaki, and Keiko Niwa wrote the script. Goro also voiced a character in the film. He even wrote lyrics for some of its songs. From Up on Poppy Hill was released in Japan on July 16, 2011. It received positive reviews. The film won the 2012 Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year.
On January 31, 2014, it was announced that Goro Miyazaki would direct his first TV series. It was called Ronja, the Robber's Daughter. This show was based on a book by Astrid Lindgren. Polygon Pictures animated the series, and Studio Ghibli helped produce it. The show ran for one season from 2014 to 2015, with 26 episodes.
In May 2020, Studio Ghibli confirmed that Goro Miyazaki was working on a new film. On June 3, 2020, they announced it would be Earwig and the Witch. This movie was based on a novel by Diana Wynne Jones. It was the first fully 3D computer-animated Ghibli film. Earwig and the Witch first showed at the Lumière Film Festival on October 18, 2020. It later premiered on Japanese TV on December 30, 2020.
