The governor of Northern Rhodesia was like a special representative for the British King or Queen. This person worked in the self-governing colony of Northern Rhodesia (which is now Zambia) from 1924 to 1964.
The British monarch chose the governor. The governor acted as the local leader, similar to a head of state. They followed instructions from the British government to help run the colony.
How the Governor's Job Started
The job of governor was officially created on 20 February 1924. This happened when a special rulebook, called the Northern Rhodesia Order in Council, 1924, was put into place.
This rulebook said that instead of an "Administrator" (who was in charge before), there would now be a "Governor and Commander in Chief" for Northern Rhodesia. This meant the governor was the main leader and also in charge of any military forces there.
