Grace Church Cathedral: A Historic Place
This church was started in 1846. It was the fifth Episcopal group to form in Charleston. The building was designed by an architect named E.B. White. He used a style called Gothic Revival, which looks like old castles and cathedrals. The church was finished in 1848.
Surviving Tough Times
Grace Church Cathedral has seen a lot of history. It stayed open during the American Civil War. However, it was hit by a cannon shell in January 1864. Luckily, it was able to reopen the very next year.
The church also faced natural disasters. It was badly damaged by a big earthquake in August 1886. Later, a hurricane in 1911 caused more damage. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo also hit the church hard. Despite these challenges, the church has always been repaired and reopened.
Becoming a Cathedral
In November 2015, Grace Church was chosen to become the new cathedral for the Episcopal Church in South Carolina. Before this, the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul had been the main cathedral. But that church joined a different group in 2012.
To celebrate its new role, Grace Church received a special gift. In April 2016, Robert Willis, who is a very important leader from Canterbury, England, gave the church a Canterbury cross. This is a symbol of Christianity. The head of the Episcopal Church, Bishop Michael Curry, was also there for this important event.
