Grace May North (born February 1, 1876 – died July 23, 1960) was a talented writer who wrote stories for children and teenagers. She was also a newspaper journalist. She mostly used her real name, Grace May North. But some of her later books were also published under the pen-name Carol Norton.

Grace May North was born in Utica, New York on February 1, 1876. During her career, she worked as a newspaper journalist. She lived in New York City for a while. From 1910 to 1915, she worked at the Webster Branch of the New York Public Library. Her job there included running a storytelling club for girls. She also told stories in schools and other places. Later, she moved west to Carson City, Nevada. After that, she lived in Santa Barbara, California. Grace May North passed away in San Luis Obispo, California, on July 23, 1960. She was buried in Halcyon Cemetery in California.

Her Writing Career

Grace May North wrote most of her books between about 1918 and 1935. She created two series of novels for teenage girls. She also wrote many other individual books, mostly for girls. Many of these later books were also released under her pen-name, Carol Norton. Besides her books for girls, she also wrote three books in the X Bar X Boys series for teenage boys. She also worked on a series called Southwestern Stories for Children for younger kids, but these were not published.

Her Family

Grace May North was the daughter of Eugene Northrup and Adele N. Harrington. She married William Nelson Monfort on August 3, 1923, in Santa Barbara. William was a widower. One of her step-sons, Donald L. Monfort, sadly passed away during World War II. Her husband died in San Diego, California, on January 13, 1957. He was also buried in Halcyon Cemetery. Her other step-son, Gordon W. Monfort, passed away in Fresno in 1985.
