Graeme John Lloyd (born 9 April 1967) is a former professional baseball pitcher from Australia. He played for several teams in Major League Baseball (MLB). These teams included the Milwaukee Brewers, New York Yankees, and Toronto Blue Jays. He also played for the Montreal Expos, Florida Marlins, New York Mets, and Kansas City Royals.

Playing Baseball in the Major Leagues

Graeme Lloyd was the third Australian to pitch in Major League Baseball. He played for ten years, always as a relief pitcher. A relief pitcher comes into the game after the starting pitcher. Lloyd finished his career with 30 wins and 36 losses. He also had 17 saves and 97 holds.

Graeme's Pitching Style

When he was at his best, Lloyd threw a fast pitch called a sinking fastball. This pitch could reach speeds of 90 miles per hour. He also threw a slider, which is a pitch that curves. Later in his career, he added a palmball to his pitches. For much of his time in baseball, he was known as a left-handed specialist. This means he was often brought into the game to pitch against strong left-handed hitters on the other team.

Winning the World Series

In August 1996, Lloyd joined the New York Yankees. He was traded from the Milwaukee Brewers. That year, Lloyd became the first Australian-born baseball player to win a World Series. The World Series is the championship series of Major League Baseball.

In Game 4 of the 1996 World Series, Lloyd helped the Yankees win. He came into the game in the ninth inning. He got a left-handed batter, Fred McGriff, to hit into a double play. This ended the inning. The Yankees then took the lead in the tenth inning. Lloyd returned to the mound and struck out Ryan Klesko.

Lloyd won his second World Series with the Yankees in 1998. They defeated the San Diego Padres. Graeme Lloyd is still the only Australian-born baseball player to have won two World Series titles.

Overcoming Challenges

Graeme Lloyd missed the entire 2000 baseball season. He was recovering from surgery on his arm. In 2001, he received the Tony Conigliaro Award. This award is given to a Major League Baseball player. It honors someone who has shown great spirit, determination, and courage. They must have overcome a big challenge or difficulty.

International and Coaching Career

Graeme Lloyd also played for his home country, Australia. He represented Australia at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. There, his team won a silver medal.

After his playing career, Lloyd became a coach. He has coached the Australia national baseball team at different levels. He coached the senior team, the U23 team, and the U18 team. He also coached the Australia women's national baseball team.

Lloyd has worked as a pitching coach in the Australian Baseball League. He coached for the Perth Heat and the Melbourne Aces. He also managed a team called Geelong-Korea in the same league.

Personal Life and Charity Work

Graeme Lloyd's wife, Cindy, passed away in 2000 at the age of 26. In 2000 and 2001, Graeme became a spokesperson for a charity. It was called the Graeme Lloyd and Jon Mechanic Field of Dreams. This charity was dedicated in Cindy Lloyd's name.
