The Grande Fache, also known as Gran Facha or Cuspide de Bachimaña, is a tall summit in the Pyrenees mountains. It stands at an impressive 3,005 meters (9,859 feet) high. This mountain is special because it sits right on the border between France and Spain. It also marks the main watershed of the Pyrenees, meaning water on one side flows to the Atlantic Ocean and water on the other side flows to the Mediterranean Sea.

Where is Grande Fache Located?

Grande Fache is found in the middle of three large, bowl-shaped valleys called cirques. These are the Marcadau, Piedrafita, and Bachimaña cirques. Around the mountain, you'll find many beautiful lakes, which are called Ibóns in this region.

Because it's so tall and shaped like a pyramid, Grande Fache is a popular mountain for climbers to explore.

Who First Climbed Grande Fache?

The very first time someone successfully climbed Grande Fache was in the summer of 1874. This amazing feat was achieved by Henry Russell, a famous explorer, along with his guide, Cauterets Latour.

How Can You Reach the Summit?

There are different ways to climb Grande Fache, depending on whether you start from France or Spain.

Starting from France

If you begin your journey from France, you can take a path that starts in the Wallon valley. Another route begins from the Respomuso area, which is part of the Piedrafita cirque.

Starting from Spain

From Spain, the adventure usually begins at the la Sarra marsh, near Sallent de Gállego. The path then takes you past the Respumuso dam and the beautiful ibón de Campoplano. You'll continue past the Ibóns de la Fache and the port de la Fache. Finally, the path becomes very steep as you climb up to the summit of Grande Fache.
