Granville Square is a tall office building in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It stands at 200 Granville Street in the city's busy downtown area. This building was finished in 1973 and is about 138.4 meters (454 feet) tall.

The tower and its open plaza are built right over the train tracks of the Canadian Pacific Railway. It is also very close to Waterfront Station, which used to be the main train station.

Originally, Granville Square was built by Marathon Realty. It was meant to be the main office for Canadian Pacific. For many years, the newspapers The Vancouver Sun and The Province had offices there. They were on the ground floor and some upper floors until 2017. Today, a company called Vision Critical uses the mezzanine floor.

On top of the building, you can see the Vancouver Harbour Control Tower. This tower helps guide float planes as they land and take off from the Burrard Inlet. It is known as the tallest control tower in the world for these types of planes.

Building History: How Granville Square Was Built

Granville Square was the only part of a much bigger plan that actually got built. This plan was called "Project 200." It got its name because it needed a huge investment of 200 million dollars from the government.

What Was Project 200?

Project 200 was a very ambitious idea for downtown Vancouver. It aimed to build many new office buildings, hotels, and homes. All of these buildings were planned to be constructed right over the existing Canadian Pacific train tracks.

One of the most interesting parts of Project 200 was the idea for a "Waterfront Freeway." This freeway would have had ramps leading to parking garages under the new office buildings. From there, the freeway was supposed to go under the "Brockton Point tunnel" to connect to the North Shore.

Why Project 200 Didn't Happen

However, the full Project 200 plan never went ahead. There were two main reasons for this. First, there wasn't enough money to fund such a massive project. Second, many local groups and people were against the idea. They formed a "grassroots opposition" to stop it.

Who Owns Granville Square Now?

A company called Colliers International has had offices in Granville Square since 1973. They currently use four floors of the building. The building's current owner is Cadillac Fairview.
