Early Life and Musical Journey
Graph Nobel was born in Toronto, Ontario. Her parents were from Trinidad. Growing up, she heard many types of music. These included parang, calypso, and soca from Trinidad. She also listened to reggae music.
Discovering Her Passion
Nobel started acting in theatre when she was young. This helped her get into the arts early on. As a teenager, she found hip hop music. This new discovery inspired her to become an artist herself. She has said that the music video for "Bonita Applebum" by A Tribe Called Quest showed her many creative ideas.
Moving to New York
Graph Nobel wanted to become an emcee, which is another name for a rapper. To follow this dream, she moved to New York City. She hoped to become a part of the city's lively hip-hop music scene.
Finding Her Own Sound
After returning from New York, Nobel kept exploring new music styles. She wanted to push her creative limits. She was part of a female hip-hop group called Gravity. However, her desire to try new sounds did not match the group's ideas. Because of these creative differences, the group eventually broke up.
Black Corners Collective
Nobel then joined the Black Corners collective. This was a group of artists who wanted to make music in a "progressive" way. They did not want to be limited to just one type of music. Through this group, Nobel developed her own special sound. She started using atmospheric guitars, hip-hop beats, and strong bass lines. She also added samples, string arrangements, and new ways of programming music.
