About Graph Nobel
Graph Nobel was born in Toronto. Her parents were from Trinidad. Because of this, she grew up hearing many types of music. These included parang, calypso, soca, and reggae.
She started acting in theatre when she was young. This helped her get into the arts early. As a teenager, she found hip hop music. This inspired her to become an artist herself. She once said that the music video for "Bonita Applebum" by a Tribe Called Quest showed her what was possible.
Her Musical Journey
Graph Nobel wanted to be an emcee, which is another name for a rapper. To learn more, she moved to New York City. She hoped to become a part of the city's hip-hop music scene.
After coming back from New York City, she kept trying new music styles. She wanted to push her creative limits. At one point, she was in a female hip-hop group called Gravity. But her ideas for new sounds were different from the group's. So, the group decided to split up.
Later, Graph Nobel joined a group of artists called Black Corners collective. This group liked to try new things with music. They did not want to stick to just one type of music. Here, Nobel created her own special sound. She used cool guitar sounds, hip-hop beats, and strong bass lines. She also added samples, string music, and new computer programming.
Awards and Collaborations
In August 2002, Graph Nobel performed at the 6th Toronto Urban Music Festival. Soon after, in September 2002, she won the Galaxie Rising Stars Award from CBC. This award helps new artists grow.
In 2007, she recorded songs with big music labels. These included Aftermath and BME. She worked with famous producers like Dr. Dre, Che Pope, and Mark Batson. She also worked with Lil Jon.
In May 2008, Nobel joined a group called Idle Warship. This electro-rap group included Talib Kweli and Res. They released their "Party Robot" mixtape in October 2009.
Graph Nobel has worked with many other artists too. Some of these include Muja Messiah, Pharrell Williams, N.E.R.D., The Neptunes, The Clipse, and Questlove. She has also performed on stage with groups like The Roots and Metric.
