Res's Music Journey
Starting Her Solo Career
Res released her first album, How I Do, in 2001. Her first song from the album was "Golden Boys." Even though its music video played a lot on VH1, the song was not very popular on the radio.
Later that year, "Ice King" became her second song. It also did not become a big radio hit. In early 2002, Res released "They-Say Vision." This song and its music video became very popular. It reached number one on the Billboard Dance chart. It also reached number 37 on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. Because of this song's success, her album How I Do appeared on the Billboard 200 chart. A fourth song, "Sittin' Back," was also released but was not as successful.
In 2002, Res also worked with other musicians like Tony Allen and Baaba Maal. They created a song for the Red Hot and Riot album. This album honored the Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. Res also sang a cover of "Miracles" by Jefferson Starship. This song was for the movie Maid in Manhattan, which starred Jennifer Lopez.
Changes in Record Labels
In 2003, Res's record label, MCA Records, closed down. It became part of Geffen Records. Res later asked to leave her contract. This was because the label would not release any more of her music. After leaving Geffen, Res worked as a model. She appeared in print ads for Marc Ecko's "Ecko Red" clothing line.
In 2006, Res recorded "To Empower" for the movie Akeelah and the Bee. She also joined Gnarls Barkley's tour, singing backup vocals. During this time, she was also writing new songs for her second album.
New Albums and Projects
In 2009, Res released her second album, Black.Girls.Rock!. It was available to buy online. This album included songs she had recorded for her earlier label. Res described Black.Girls.Rock! as an album with "great, classic songs." She also paid to have a small number of vinyl records made.
On February 14, 2011, Res released A Box of Chocolates. This album was a collection of unreleased songs and remixed tracks. It was only available online. The album was mixed by DJ NI** Sky. It featured a mix of different music styles. Res released it as a gift to her fans. They were waiting for the official release of Black.Girls.Rock!.
In 2013, Res signed with Javotti Media/EOne Records. Her third album, 'Reset', was planned for release on September 15, 2016. However, as of July 2025, the album has not been released. A fundraising campaign for the album raised $39,000.
Working with Idle Warship
In 2009, Res teamed up with her long-time friend and rapper Talib Kweli. They formed a hip-hop and electro music group called Idle Warship. They shared some preview songs online, including "Steady." This song used parts of "Sunglasses At Night" by Corey Hart. In June 2009, Idle Warship went on their first tour in Europe. They performed for many fans in Switzerland, Norway, France, and Germany.
Idle Warship also created a mixtape called Party Robots. It was available to download in October 2010 on Res's official website. Their first album, Habits of the Heart, was released on November 1, 2011. The first song from this album was "Laser Beams."
