Jullyann Inderia Gordon Black (born November 8, 1977) is a talented Canadian singer and songwriter. She has released four studio albums and two remix EPs. Jully Black has worked with many famous artists, writing songs and collaborating with them. Some of these artists include Nas, Destiny's Child, and Sean Paul.

Many fans and people in the music industry call her "Canada's Queen of R&B." CBC Music also named her one of "The 25 Greatest Canadian Singers Ever."

Early Life and Beginnings

Jullyann Inderia Gordon Black was born in Toronto, Ontario. Her parents were immigrants from Jamaica. She is the youngest of nine children. Jully grew up in the North York area, in a neighborhood called Jane and Finch.

After her parents separated, her mother, Agatha, raised her in a strict Pentecostal home.

When Jully Black was 19, Warner/Chappell Music discovered her and signed her right away. Soon after, Universal Music Canada offered her a deal to help her career grow. Jully used these chances to become a successful artist.

She received her first Juno Award nomination in 1997. She continued to be nominated almost every year after that. She also got to work with and write for many well-known artists.

Early Hits and Albums

In 1998, Jully Black had a song called "Rally'n" that became a Top 40 hit in Canada. Other songs like "You Changed" and "Between Me and U" also became popular. She was asked to be part of Rascalz's famous hip hop song, "Northern Touch," but she couldn't because of other plans.

In 1999, she was featured on 2Rude's song "Dissin Us." This song won the MuchMusic Video Award for Best R&B/Soul Video in 2000.

Jully Black's first album, I Traveled, was supposed to come out in 2003. However, the record label, MCA, closed down that year, so the album was not released then.

This Is Me and Revival

In the summer of 2005, Jully Black released a new album called This Is Me through Universal Music Canada. This album included popular songs like "Sweat of Your Brow" and "5x Love."

In the same year, Jully Black acted in a play called "Da Kink in My Hair." She played the role of the Preacher. The play was very successful and sold out all its shows. This play later became a TV series on the Global Television Network. Jully Black sang the opening song for the show and appeared in two episodes.

In the summer of 2007, her new song, "Seven Day Fool," was released. It became one of her first Top 10 hits in Canada. Her second album, Revival, came out on October 16, 2007. This album won the Juno Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. Both "Seven Day Fool" and "Revival" have been played over a million times on Spotify.

Later Projects and Appearances

Jully Black was a reporter on the sixth season of Canadian Idol, a TV singing competition. She also hosted the 2008 Canadian Radio Music Awards. She has been a celebrity reporter for the TV show etalk. Jully Black is also a regular guest on the TV talk show The Marilyn Denis Show.

In 2009, Jully Black released her third studio album, The Black Book. After the album came out, she started a tour across Canada. She even performed in Vancouver at the 2010 Winter Olympics. In 2010, her song "At the Roncies" was chosen to represent Ontario in CBC Radio 2's Great Canadian Song Quest.

In 2012, Jully Black was chosen to perform for Celine Dion at the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival. This event celebrated Jamaica's 50th Anniversary of Independence. She was also nominated for a 2012 Juno Award for 'Best R&B/Soul Recording' for her song "Set It Off" with Kardinal Offishall. In the same year, she released an EP called Dropping W(8).

In 2020, Jully Black performed on FreeUp! The Emancipation Day Special. In 2022, she was a contestant on the eighth season of The Amazing Race Canada.

In 2023, Jully Black sang the Canadian national anthem at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game. She changed a lyric to "our home on native land" to show respect for Indigenous groups in Canada. The Assembly of First Nations later honored her for this action. In the same year, she joined other stars to record Serena Ryder's song "What I Wouldn't Do." This song was released to raise money for Kids Help Phone's Feel Out Loud campaign, which helps young people with their mental health.

In 2024, she narrated a TV documentary series called Paid in Full: The Battle for Black Music. In 2025, Jully Black started her first headlining tour in 17 years, with 14 shows.
