Early Life and Growing Up
Jully Black was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were immigrants from Jamaica. She is the youngest of nine children in her family.
Jully grew up in the North York area of Toronto, in a neighbourhood called Jane and Finch. After her parents separated, her mother, Aretha, raised her in a very religious home.
Jully Black's Music Journey
Jully Black was discovered by a music company called Warner/Chappell Music when she was just 19 years old. Soon after, Universal Music Canada offered her a record deal. These opportunities helped her career take off.
She received her first Juno Award nomination in 1997. The Juno Awards are like the Grammys for Canadian music. She continued to be nominated almost every year! Jully also got to work with many famous artists like Nas, Destiny's Child, and Sean Paul.
Early Hits and First Album
In 1998, Jully Black had a song called "Rally'n" that became a Top 40 hit in Canada. Other songs like "You Changed" and "Between Me and U" also became popular. She was asked to be part of a famous hip hop song called "Northern Touch" by Rascalz, but she couldn't because she was busy with other things.
In 1999, she appeared on a song called "Dissin Us" by 2Rude. This song won a MuchMusic Video Award for Best R&B/Soul Video in 2000.
Jully's first album was supposed to come out in 2003. It was called I Traveled. However, the record company closed down, so the album was not released at that time.
This Is Me and Revival Albums
In 2005, Jully Black released a new album called This Is Me. It included hit songs like "Sweat of Your Brow" and "5x Love." This album was very popular, and many people wanted to listen to her music.
That same year, Jully also acted in a play called "Da Kink in My Hair" in Toronto. The play was a big success and sold out many shows. This led to a TV series where Jully sang the opening song and appeared in a couple of episodes.
In 2007, her song "Seven Day Fool" became a Top 10 hit in Canada. Her second album, Revival, came out later that year. It won a Juno Award for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. Both "Seven Day Fool" and the "Revival" album have been played over a million times on Spotify!
