Gravel Ridge was once a special kind of community in Pulaski County, Arkansas. These communities are called census-designated places (CDPs). This means they are areas that look like towns but are not officially governed as cities.
In the year 2000, about 3,232 people lived in Gravel Ridge. Later, this area became part of the nearby city of Sherwood. Gravel Ridge is also part of a larger area called the Metropolitan Statistical Area. This is a big region that includes Little Rock, North Little Rock, and Conway.

Where is Gravel Ridge?

The area of Gravel Ridge is about 1.9 square miles (4.9 square kilometers). All of this land is dry land; there are no large bodies of water within its boundaries.
A Look Back: Gravel Ridge's History
Gravel Ridge used to be an independent community. But in 2008, something big happened. On April 1, 2008, the people living in Gravel Ridge voted in a special election. They had to decide if they wanted their community to join a nearby city.
Two cities wanted Gravel Ridge to become part of them: Sherwood and Jacksonville. Both cities had already voted to welcome Gravel Ridge. So, it was up to the people of Gravel Ridge to choose.
The voters in Gravel Ridge chose Sherwood. A large majority, 74 percent, voted to join Sherwood. Only 26 percent voted to join Jacksonville. This decision meant that Gravel Ridge officially became part of the city of Sherwood.
Who Lived in Gravel Ridge?
In 2000, when the last official count was done, there were 3,232 people living in Gravel Ridge. These people lived in 1,275 homes. Out of these homes, 887 were families.
The population density was about 1,709 people per square mile (659 people per square kilometer). This means a lot of people lived close together in the area.
Most of the people in Gravel Ridge were White (about 80.57%). There were also Black residents (about 14.17%), Native American (0.65%), and Asian (1.08%). Some people were from other backgrounds or more than one background. About 2.94% of the people were of Hispanic or Latino heritage.
Many homes (36.2%) had children under 18 living there. More than half of the homes (52.7%) were married couples. About 13.7% of homes were led by a single mother.
The average age of people in Gravel Ridge was 32 years old. About 26.9% of the population was under 18. About 10.9% were young adults aged 18 to 24. The largest group, 34.4%, was between 25 and 44 years old.
