Gray Rocks was a well-known resort in Quebec, Canada. It was located in the beautiful Laurentian Mountains. This resort was open all year long. It was first built as a place for skiing on Sugarloaf Hill. The hill had 22 ski trails. These trails included easy, intermediate, and expert runs. There was also a place for snowboarding. You could even take lessons at the Snow Eagle Ski School.

In warmer months, Gray Rocks offered many other activities. Guests could play golf on two courses. They could also go boating on Lac Ouimet. Swimming in the pool or lake was popular. Other fun things to do included tennis, horseback riding, bicycling, and hiking.

The resort had a large hotel with 105 rooms. There were also 56 condominium units for rent. Guests could enjoy French food at the restaurant. A spa was available for relaxation.

Gray Rocks first opened in 1906. The hotel closed in 2009 during a time when the economy was difficult. A fire badly damaged the main building on November 25, 2014.

A Look Back at Gray Rocks

How It Started

Gray Rocks was started in 1905. It was founded by George Wheeler from New Hampshire. His granddaughter, Lucille Wheeler, became a famous skier. She won a Bronze Medal in alpine skiing at the 1956 Winter Olympics. This was a big achievement for her and for Gray Rocks.

Ski School Excellence

In 1948, a man named Réal Charette made history. He had been a winter warfare instructor in World War II. He became the first Canadian to lead a ski school in Canada. This was the famous Snow Eagle Ski School at Gray Rocks.

A Popular Destination

From the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s, Gray Rocks was very popular. Many families from the United States visited the resort. They came for golf, tennis, and swimming in the summer. In the winter, they enjoyed ski packages. It was known as a top resort in the Laurentians.

The Resort's Closure

Gray Rocks closed its doors at the end of March 2009. It stopped operating as both a hotel and a ski resort. Of its two golf courses, La Belle closed in 2020. It had been open for 100 years. The second course, La Bête, was taken over by Clublink. Some owners of the condos at Gray Rocks now rent them out. Their rental business is called Village des Soleils.
