Grayson is a city in Carter County, Kentucky, United States. It is the main city of Carter County. Grayson is located in the northeastern part of Kentucky. You can find it along U.S. Route 60 and Interstate 64.

The city is about 21 miles west of Ashland. In 2010, about 4,217 people lived in Grayson. The city has grown a lot since Interstate 64 opened in 1975. This highway made it easier for people to travel to and from Ashland.

History of Grayson

After the American Revolutionary War, a soldier named Colonel William Grayson received a large piece of land. This land was given to him for his service in the war. In 1838, a small part of this land was chosen to build a new town. This town was named Grayson, after Colonel William Grayson.

The town of Grayson officially became a city on February 6, 1844. It was later fully recognized as a city on February 22, 1860. Grayson, Kentucky, was also a stop on the Eastern Kentucky Railway.

Grayson's Location and Roads

Grayson is in the middle-eastern part of Carter County. It sits along the Little Sandy River. This river flows into the Ohio River.

Major roads run through Grayson. Route 60 goes through the city as Main Street. Other important roads, Kentucky Route 1 and Kentucky Route 7, also meet in downtown Grayson. Interstate 64 passes through the northern part of the city. You can get onto KY 7 from Exit 172 of I-64.

Another important road, Kentucky Route 9, also known as the AA Highway, starts near Grayson. It goes for about 111 miles towards the Cincinnati area. From Grayson, Huntington, West Virginia, is about 29 miles east on I-64. Lexington is about 96 miles to the west.

The United States Census Bureau says that Grayson covers about 2.83 square miles (7.3 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, and a small part is water.

Grayson's Weather

Grayson has a type of weather called a humid subtropical climate. This means it has hot, humid summers. The winters are usually mild to cool. Since 2002, Grayson has had several strong storms. These storms caused enough damage that the government had to help with recovery efforts.
