What's in a Name?
The name Cacapon comes from the Cacapon River. This river flows into the Potomac River near the town. The name "Cacapon" comes from a Native American language. It means "medicine water."
A Bit of History
Great Cacapon was first called Cacapon Depot. This was because it was a stop on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line. A post office was set up here in 1848.
In 1876, the name was changed to Great Cacapon. This was done to avoid confusion with another place called Little Cacapon. Little Cacapon was also on the same railroad line.
Where is Great Cacapon?
Great Cacapon is about four miles down Cacapon Mountain. You can find it along Cacapon Road, which is also West Virginia Route 9. It is located west of Berkeley Springs. A famous spot nearby is the Panorama Overlook.
