Cacapon Mountain (pronounced kə-KAY-pən) is a cool natural landmark in West Virginia. It's located in the state's eastern part, called the Eastern Panhandle. This mountain is super tall, reaching about 2,618 feet (798 meters) above the ocean! Its highest point is called High Point.

Cacapon Mountain is a special type of mountain called a folded mountain ridge. It's part of a bigger group of mountains known as the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians. This long mountain ridge stretches for about 16 miles (26 kilometers) to the northeast, all the way to the Potomac River near a town called Great Cacapon.

Where is Cacapon Mountain?

Cacapon Mountain starts in the south, just north of a place called Bloomery. This is in the northeastern part of Hampshire County.

The western side of the mountain has many steep, deep valleys. One of these valleys is called Horsebone Hollow. Another valley has a stream flowing through it called Falling Spring Run.

The Cacapon River

Beyond these valleys, you'll find the Cacapon River. This river flows right next to Cacapon Mountain until it joins up with the Potomac River. It's like the river is following the mountain on its journey!

Mountain Borders

For a while, Cacapon Mountain actually forms the border between Hampshire County in West Virginia and Frederick County in Virginia. It's a natural boundary between the two states.

When the mountain reaches Morgan County, a big part of it is inside Cacapon Resort State Park. This park is a great place for people to visit and enjoy nature.

Interesting Mountain Features

Cacapon Mountain has some cool natural features. It has several warm springs that flow out from its eastern side. These springs get their water from a type of rock called sandstone, which is very old.

Warm Springs

One famous place where these warm springs appear is Berkeley Springs. People have enjoyed these warm waters for a very long time!

Panorama Overlook

The northern end of Cacapon Mountain offers an amazing view. There's a spot called the Panorama Overlook right off West Virginia Route 9. From here, you can see three different states at once! You can also see where the Cacapon River and the Potomac River meet. It's a truly breathtaking sight.
