Where is Green Acres?

Green Acres is found in Delaware, about 4.5 miles north of the city of Wilmington. It is also just a few miles from the border of Pennsylvania.

A major highway, I-95, runs along the southeast side of Green Acres. The community has two main entrances. Both of these connect to Silverside Road, which is on the northeast side. Across Silverside Road, you'll find the neighborhood of Windybush. On the western side of Green Acres, Stoney Creek flows, forming its border with Carrcroft.

The Story of Green Acres

Green Acres was created in 1955 by a company called Franklin Builders. The land it was built on used to belong to Patricia Monagham. Franklin Builders liked to use the word 'green' in the names of their projects. They also built communities like Green Meadow and Radnor Green.

Green Acres was designed to be a great place for middle-class families to live. Unlike many developments at the time, homes were built among tall trees. The builders did not clear all the land. Shaded sidewalks were also added along every street. This made it safe for children to play and for families to go for walks.

It took four years to finish building Green Acres. In total, 376 homes were completed. The neighborhood is famous for its modern split-level houses. These homes looked a bit like the designs of a famous architect named Frank Lloyd Wright.

The streets in Green Acres were named in a special way. They were laid out in alphabetical order, and each street was named after an American college. For example, Athens, Bucknell, Carson, Drake, Emery, Fresno, and Grinnell roads all run parallel to Silverside Road. Other streets like Newcomb, Oberlin, Quincy, Radford, Stanford, and Tulane roads run across from Silverside Road.
