The History of Green Meadow
How Green Meadow Started
Green Meadow was built by a company called Franklin Builders. This company liked to use the word "green" in the names of its neighborhoods. For example, they also built a place called Green Acres.
The first homes in Green Meadow went on sale in 1954. There were 47 "ranch-type houses" available. These homes were very popular. On the very first day they were open to the public, 16 houses were sold!
Modern Homes with Air Conditioning
One special thing about these early homes was that they came with air conditioning. This was quite new and exciting back in the 1950s.
A person who moved into Green Meadow in 1954 remembered how hot it was on the Fourth of July. Their new house was the only one they saw that day with air conditioning. They were very happy to have it!
At first, there were not many trees in the area. Residents had to go to the post office to get their mail. But they had air conditioning, which was a big deal!
Growing the Community
The main road in the neighborhood was originally quite narrow. This caused some problems with parking. Later in the same year, the roads were made wider. About 30 more houses were built, bringing the total number of homes to nearly 80.
In 1958, residents started getting their mail delivered right to their homes. That same year, another company, Chapman Construction, added more houses. This new section was called "Meadowbrook" or "Greenmeadow II."
A Famous Neighbor?
In August 1964, a newspaper called The Morning News made a mistake. They incorrectly reported that Green Meadow was the home of Joe Biden. Joe Biden later became the 46th president of the United States.
Dealing with Floods
In July 1989, Shellpot Creek overflowed its banks. The water came very close to the homes in Green Meadow. One resident said the water came right up to their house.
They were lucky it wasn't worse, but it taught them a lesson. After that, they made sure to get flood insurance. Even though the creek might look calm sometimes, heavy rain can make the water rise quickly. It's not unusual for the creek to go 10 feet over its banks!
Connecting with New Neighborhoods
In 1991, a new community called Gardens of Penny Lane was built. These new homes were larger and more modern. Gardens of Penny Lane was connected to Green Meadow, linking the two neighborhoods together.
