History of Green City

Green City started in April 1880. A farmer named Henry Pfeiffer asked Thomas J. Dockery to plan out the town. It was built on what used to be a cornfield.

The town was created because of the Quincy, Missouri & Pacific railway. This railway built tracks nearby in the early 1880s. A train station was built with money from local farmers.

In 1881, C. B. Comstock built a store and a warehouse. Around the same time, S.H. Davis moved a small building from Kiddville. He used it as Green City's first post office. Green City officially became a city on February 10, 1882.

Green City has its own airport, called Widmark Airport. It's unusual for a small town like Green City to have an airport. The actor Richard Widmark owned a ranch in the area. He helped pay for the airport's construction. That's why it was named after him.

Two important places in Green City are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Green City Presbyterian Church and the Green City Railroad Depot.
