History of Green Hill
Green Hill was first settled a long time ago, even before the year 1800. Two families, led by John Cloyd and John Williamson, moved there from Nashville. They were trying to escape a serious illness called smallpox. Later, Colonel John Donelson, Jr., built a summer home in Green Hill. The community's name might describe the green hills in the area, or it could be named after a former state treasurer from North Carolina.
During the 1800s, Green Hill had its own post office. It opened around 1834 or 1838 but closed in 1904.
Just before the American Civil War, Green Hill had a high school. There were also several businesses. These included a general store, a hotel, a place that processed tobacco, a flour mill (for making flour), and a machine for carding (preparing fibers like wool). A new Green Hill High School opened in August 2020. It is located where Lebanon Road and North Greenhill Road meet.
