A Look Back in Time: Green Valley's History

Green Valley has an interesting past, especially during the 1800s. It was once an important stop for travelers and mail carriers.

Lassiter's Ranch: A Historic Stop

Long ago, Green Valley was home to a place called Lassiter's Ranch. Imagine a time before cars and planes! This ranch was like a rest stop for people traveling on the San Antonio–San Diego Mail Line. This mail line was a very important route that carried mail and passengers across a huge distance, connecting San Antonio in Texas all the way to San Diego.

Travel by Mule and Coach

Traveling back then was tough! From Lassiter's Ranch, passengers sometimes rode on mules. These strong animals would carry them about 18 miles through different canyons and washes, like Oriflamme Canyon and Vallecito Wash, until they reached Carrizo Creek Station.

If travelers wanted to go all the way to San Diego, which was about 67 miles away, they could ride or take a coach from the ranch. The journey would take them through several other ranches and missions, including Julian's Ranch, Williams' Ranch, and Mission San Diego de Alcalá.

Coaches carrying baggage and other passengers took a different, longer route. They followed the Southern Emigrant Trail through Warner Pass to Rancho Valle de San Felipe. From there, they continued on an old wagon road to San Diego. This path led them through places like San Ysabel, Rancho Santa María, and San Pasqual.

Green Valley, with its ranch, played a key role in these early travel and communication networks, helping people and mail move across the vast California landscape.
