Greenbrier is a small, unincorporated community in southeastern Limestone County, Alabama, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but without its own local government. In 2020, about 30 people lived here. Greenbrier is located about 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles) from the border between Madison County and Limestone County. It sits between the cities of Madison and Athens.

History of Greenbrier

Greenbrier likely got its name from Greenbrier, Virginia. Many of the first people who settled in this area came from Virginia. A post office opened in Greenbrier in 1869 and served the community until 1920. Today, there's a small restaurant in the northern part of Greenbrier. It's known for a cool mural painted around the outside of the building.

Transportation and Local Economy

A railway line owned by Norfolk Southern runs south of Greenbrier. While there isn't a train station in Greenbrier itself, there are special rail lines that lead to the nearby Toyota-Mazda plant. These lines are used to bring car parts to the plant and ship finished parts out.

In 2020, the Toyota-Mazda Plant opened just north of Greenbrier. This big car manufacturing plant has brought many changes to the area. For example, the road next to the plant was made wider, now having four lanes. The opening of this plant is expected to bring more people to Greenbrier and help the community grow. Before the plant was built, only about two people lived in Greenbrier. The population has already grown to around 30 people since the plant opened.
