How Greene Started
Greene began as a postal area called "Elm Springs" in 1855. This first settlement was a few miles southwest of where Greene is today.
In 1871, a railroad company decided to build a train station and a roundhouse (a place to store and fix trains) on the east side of the Shell Rock River. This new railroad spot attracted the Elm Springs community.
The postal area's name changed from Elm Springs to Greene in 1871. This was to honor Judge George Greene. He was the president of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Minnesota railroad. Judge Greene helped buy the land for the new town and gave a lot of money and land to help it grow.
By 1879, the Greene postal area officially became "The Town of Greene." This meant it was recognized as an official town with its own local government.
