Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Greenly Island (called Île Greenly in French) is a small island in Quebec, Canada. It's located near the border of Newfoundland and Labrador. You can find it in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, at the end of the Strait of Belle Isle. The island is mostly rocky, but it has some green plants growing on it. There's also a small fishing village and a lighthouse there.

A Special Home for Birds

Greenly Island is part of a very important place called the Baie de Brador Migratory Bird Sanctuary. This sanctuary also includes Aux Perroquets Island. It's a protected area, which means it's kept safe for nature.

During spring and summer, no one is allowed on the island without a special permit. This rule helps protect the many birds that come here. The land on Greenly Island is owned by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec. The Province of Québec Society for the Protection of Birds owns Aux Perroquets Island.

Many different kinds of seabirds come to Greenly Island during their breeding season. You might see birds like the ring-billed gull and the herring gull. Other visitors include different types of terns, the razorbill, the black guillemot, and the cute Atlantic puffin.

Greenly Island became famous on April 13, 1928. On that day, an airplane named the Bremen landed there. This was a huge moment in history! It was the first time an airplane successfully flew across the Atlantic Ocean from east to west.

The first person to spot the plane was a local named Antoine Letemplier. He was so surprised and excited that he ran to his parents. He shouted, "Flying fish! Flying fish!" It was an unforgettable sight for the islanders.
