Education and Early Life
Greg Fisk finished high school in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1963. He then went to Indiana University and earned a degree in Geography in 1971.
Business Career
Fisk started his own company called SeaFisk Consulting & Management, LLC. This company was based in Juneau and helped businesses involved in fishing and the seafood industry in Alaska.
His company also worked on other projects. For example, in 2012, SeaFisk helped the Juneau Economic Development Council with an idea for a public shuttle system in downtown Juneau.
Greg Fisk and his son, Ian, were both involved in the fishing industry. After Ian graduated from the University of Oregon, they traveled to Ensenada, Mexico. There, they bought a fishing boat from the Mexican government and sailed it to Seattle to fix it up.
Political Journey
Before 2015, Greg Fisk had never run for an elected position. Many people in Alaska politics didn't know him well. However, he had been involved for many years in issues related to fishing, which is a very big industry in Alaska. Fisk even led a special group in Juneau that tried to bring 175 jobs from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to the city.
Becoming Mayor
In 2015, Greg Fisk decided to run for mayor of Juneau. He signed up on the very last day possible. He was challenging the current mayor, Merrill Sanford, who had been running for re-election without any opponents.
Fisk ran a very active campaign, while Mayor Sanford's campaign was quieter. On October 6, 2015, Greg Fisk was elected mayor of Juneau. He won a large majority of the votes, getting about two times more votes than Sanford.
Fisk lived in the Starr Hill neighborhood. He was the first mayor of Juneau in over 20 years who did not live on Douglas Island. The last mayor who didn't live there was Jamie Parsons, who left office in 1994.
