Greg Knox is an American college football coach. He was born on September 10, 1963. He is currently the director of career and professional development for Mississippi State University. He started this job in 2024.
Before this role, Knox was an interim head coach at Mississippi State University. He also served as an interim head coach for the University of Florida in 2021. From 2009 to 2021, he worked as a running backs coach for Dan Mullen at both Mississippi State and Florida.

Greg Knox's Playing Days
Greg Knox went to Rosebud-Lott High School in Lott, Texas. A coach named Jim Wacker recruited him to play football at Southwest Texas State University.
After the 1982 season, Coach Wacker moved to Texas Christian University. Knox then transferred to Ranger College in Ranger, Texas. After one year there, he moved to Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, for the 1985 season. Knox earned his bachelor's degree from Northeastern State in 1986. He later received his master's degree in 1990.
Greg Knox's Coaching Career
Greg Knox has had a long and interesting career in college football coaching. He has worked with several teams and helped many players.
Early Coaching Roles
Knox started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Northeastern State University and then at TCU. He later coached wide receivers and special teams at Stephen F. Austin. He also coached wide receivers at Ole Miss. From 1999 to 2008, he was a wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Auburn.
Coaching Running Backs
From 2009 to 2013, Knox coached running backs at Mississippi State. He continued this role, also coaching special teams, from 2014 to 2017. He then moved to Florida in 2018, where he coached running backs and special teams until 2021.
Interim Head Coach Positions
Knox has stepped in as an interim head coach for two different teams.
- Mississippi State (2017): In 2017, he led the Mississippi State Bulldogs to a win in the 2017 TaxSlayer Bowl. This was after their head coach left.
- Florida (2021): In 2021, he became the interim head coach for the Florida Gators. He led them to a win against Florida State in their last regular season game. However, they lost their bowl game against UCF in the 2021 Gasparilla Bowl.
- Mississippi State (2023): In November 2023, Knox became the interim head coach for Mississippi State again. This happened after the previous coach was let go. During his time, he famously rode an ATV in the locker room to motivate his players. He even rode it onto the field during the Egg Bowl game.
