Gregorio Cruzada Villaamil (1832 – November 29, 1884) was a Spanish art historian. He was very interested in the works of famous artists like Velasquez, Rubens, and Goya. He also studied art that the Spanish government took control of during a time called the Mendizábal confiscations. This was when many artworks from churches and monasteries became state property.

A Life for Art

Gregorio Cruzada Villaamil was born in 1832 in Alicante, Spain. His family was quite wealthy. He first worked as a diplomat, representing Spain in other countries. He lived in cities like Vienna and Berlin. In 1855, he returned to Madrid. He settled on Lope de Vega street. There, he would welcome visitors to practice fencing and discuss art.

Becoming an Art Expert

Cruzada Villaamil started writing articles about Spanish art. In December 1862, he got an important job. He became the deputy director of the Museo de la Trinidad. This museum held many artworks. He wrote the first full list of all the art in that museum. He also organized the collection by where the art came from.

Discovering Art History

Gregorio Cruzada Villaamil found new information about famous artists. He learned more about the life of Velázquez. He also studied when Rubens visited the Spanish court. Rubens came in 1603 and again in 1628–1629. Cruzada Villaamil also researched Goya's work. Goya was famous for painting cartoons for tapestries. Villaamil died in Madrid in 1884.

His Published Works

Gregorio Cruzada Villaamil wrote several important books and magazines about art. These works helped people learn more about Spanish art history.

  • El Arte en España: This was an art magazine that he published from 1862 to 1870.
  • Los tapices de Goya: This book, published in 1870, was an art catalog focusing on Goya's tapestries.
  • Rubens, diplomático español; sus viajes á España y noticia de sus cuadros, segun los inventarios de las casas reales de Austria y de Borbon: This book from 1874 discussed Rubens as a Spanish diplomat and his visits to Spain.
