History of Greilickville
Early Settlement and Industries
The Greilickville area was first settled in 1856 by Godfrey Greilick and his family. They had recently moved from a country called Bohemia. Godfrey Greilick ran several sawmills in the area, cutting wood into lumber.
Later, in 1875, two brothers named Albert and Seth H. Norris started a settlement on the shore of Grand Traverse Bay. They built a grist mill (for grinding grain), a tannery (for making leather), a brickyard, and a pottery factory. They even had a post office called Norrisville for a while.
In 1874, James W. Markham bought the Norris brothers' brickyard. He made it bigger and started selling bricks. These "Markham Bricks" were famous for their pale yellow color. This color came from the special dirt found in Cedar Lake. Many buildings in nearby Traverse City were built using these unique bricks.
Railroad and Tourism
In 1893, a train line called the Manistee and North-Eastern Railroad was extended through the community. The train station was named Greilickville to honor Godfrey Greilick. The community then started using this name.
In the early 1900s, Greilickville began to focus on tourism. It became a popular spot for large tall ships to drop off visitors who wanted to explore the region.
Community Growth and Changes
In 1961, when about 900 people lived in Greilickville, there was a special vote. People decided whether to make the area a "home-rule village" called Elmwood. However, the idea was voted down.
In 1995, the Leelanau Trail opened. This is a public path for walking and biking, built on the old train tracks of the Manistee and North-Eastern Railroad.
