Grenada Lake is a large reservoir (a man-made lake) located in Mississippi, United States. It was created on the Yalobusha River and is one of four important lakes built to control floods in northern Mississippi. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Grenada Lake to help manage water levels in the Yazoo River Basin. You can find the dam for Grenada Lake about 3 miles (5 km) northeast of Grenada, Mississippi.

Discover Grenada Lake

Grenada Lake started operating in 1954. It cost about $32 million to build. The top of its large earthen dam is about 256 feet (78 m) high. The entire Grenada Project area covers about 90,427 acres (366 km2) of land. During the fun recreation season, about 35,000 acres (140 km2) of this area is covered by water. At this water level, the lake has about 48 mi (77 km) of shoreline, which is a lot of space to explore!

Why Was Grenada Lake Built?

The main reason Grenada Lake was built is to control floods. This project was a direct result of the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. During that huge flood, the protective walls called levees broke along the Mississippi and Arkansas Rivers. This caused thousands of acres of land in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas to be completely flooded. Building lakes like Grenada Lake helps prevent such disasters from happening again.

Fun Activities at Grenada Lake

Even though flood control is the main goal, Grenada Lake is also a popular spot for outdoor fun! Many people visit the lake each year to enjoy water sports and other activities. It's a great place for fishing, and it even hosts several fishing tournaments every year.

Grenada Lake is also home to Hugh White State Park and its Carver Point Group Camp. There are many other campgrounds located all around the lake, making it a perfect place for camping trips with family and friends.
