Gress (Scottish Gaelic: Griais) is a small village, also known as a hamlet, located on the amazing Isle of Lewis in Scotland. It sits right next to a larger village called Back. Gress is part of the Stornoway area. From 1919 to 1921, Gress, along with nearby Coll and Tong, was a place where people worked together to get land for farming. This was a big moment in its history.

Exploring Gress's History

One interesting historical spot in Gress is an old corn mill. This mill was built in the 1800s. People used it to grind grain into flour until the early 1900s. Today, the two-story building is mostly in ruins. But you can still see a large millstone there. It helps us imagine how people lived and worked long ago.

Gress's Location and Landscape

Gress is found along the B895 road. This road connects the main town of Stornoway to another village called North Tolsta. The area around Gress has a unique landscape. It includes both coastal views and open moorland.

Amazing Wildlife in Gress

The wild moorland just north of Gress is a special place for birds. In the summer, it becomes a breeding ground for some cool birds. These include the Arctic skua and the great skua. These birds are known for their hunting skills.

You can also spot other interesting birds in Gress. The Iceland gull is sometimes seen here. The brent goose also visits the area. It's a great place for birdwatching. Besides birds, even insects like the colorful garden tiger moth have been spotted in Gress. It shows how much nature thrives here.
