What Groganville Looks Like

Most of the land in Groganville is used for grazing. This means animals like cattle eat the natural plants that grow there.

Almost the entire area is covered by three big farms or "pastoral stations." These are called Groganville, Palmerville, and Karma Waters.

A Look Back in Time: Groganville's History

The name Groganville comes from a man named Patrick Grogan. He ran a shop in the town back in the 1890s. Before that, the town was known as Limestone.

Patrick Grogan and his family were important in the town's early days. His father, Bryan, and his brothers, James, John, and Brian, joined him. They came to the area because of the new gold fields in Far North Queensland.

The Grogan family owned many businesses in the old town of Limestone Creek. They had a butchering business, a factory that made cordial (a sweet drink), and even pubs. They also owned a large part of the Anglo Saxon Mine. Patrick Grogan was also a Justice of the Peace, which meant he helped with local legal matters.

Groganville has always been part of the Shire of Mareeba for local government. For a few years, from 2008 to 2013, it was briefly part of the Tablelands Region. But now it's back in the Shire of Mareeba.

Who Lives in Groganville?

In both the 2016 and 2021 censuses, Groganville was recorded as having "no people or a very low population." This means it's a very quiet place with few residents.
