A Glimpse into Guásimas's History
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
Long ago, in 1898, a war happened between Spain and the United States. It was called the Spanish–American War. After the war, a special agreement was made, known as the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this treaty, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This made Puerto Rico an unincorporated territory of the U.S.
Counting the People in Guásimas
Just one year later, in 1899, the United States Department of War decided to count all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that the total number of people living in Guásimas, along with two nearby barrios called Palmas and Ancones, was 596.
