The Guadalupe River (also known as Guadalupejo) is a river in Spain. It is a smaller river that flows into the larger Guadiana River. The Guadalupe River is special because it gave its name to the island of Guadeloupe in the Caribbean Sea.

Where the Guadalupe River Flows

The Guadalupe River begins in the Sierra de Villuercas mountains. This area is in the Cáceres Province of Extremadura, Spain. The river starts near the town of Guadalupe. The town itself is named after the river. The famous Santa María de Guadalupe monastery is also in this town.

The river flows towards the south. It eventually joins the Guadiana River at the Garcia de Sola Dam. This dam is located near the town of Valdecaballeros. There is also a smaller dam close to where the Guadalupe River meets the Guadiana.

What "Guadalupe" Means

The name "Guadalupe" comes from the Arabic language. Experts believe it comes from the Arabic words wādī al-lubb. This phrase means "hidden river." The river gets this name because it becomes very narrow as it flows near the town of Guadalupe.

Some people also think the name might come from the Arabic word wadi, meaning "valley" or "river." They combine this with the Latin word lupus, which means "wolf." However, the "hidden river" explanation is more commonly accepted.
