A Look Back: Guanábano's History

Guanábano has an interesting past. After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a special area of the United States.

In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that Guanábano (which was spelled Guanábanas back then) and the nearby area of Mal Paso had a combined population of 723 people.

In Guanábano, you can find the Puente de Coloso. This is a special bridge that crosses the Culebrinas River. It was very important a long time ago when Puerto Rico grew a lot of sugarcane. The bridge helped move the sugarcane during that busy time.

Exploring Guanábano's Neighborhoods

In Puerto Rico, a "barrio" like Guanábano is often divided into smaller areas. These smaller parts are called sectores (which means sectors in English). Think of them like different neighborhoods within a larger community.

The names of these sectors can be different. Some are just called "sector," while others might be called "urbanización" or "reparto." These names describe the type of area, like a planned neighborhood or a housing development.

Here are some of the sectors you can find in Guanábano barrio:

  • Parcelas Luyando
