Playing Career Highlights
Guido Buchwald started his professional football journey in 1983 with VfB Stuttgart. He played 325 games for this club in the German Bundesliga, scoring 28 goals. One tough moment in his career was in 1986. The coach, Franz Beckenbauer, did not pick him for the World Cup in Mexico.
However, four years later, he was a key part of the team that won the World Cup in Italy. With Stuttgart, he helped his team win two German championships in 1984 and 1992. They also reached the finals of the German Cup in 1986 and the UEFA Cup in 1989.
A truly special moment for him was on the very last day of the 1991–92 season. He scored the winning goal against Bayer Leverkusen. This goal, scored just six minutes before the end, secured the championship for Stuttgart!
In 1994, Guido moved to Japan to play for the team Urawa Red Diamonds. He returned to Germany in 1998 to play for Karlsruher SC. After one more season in the second division, he retired from playing. He then stayed with the club as a director of sports.
Life After Playing Football
After retiring as a player, Guido Buchwald continued his career in football. He first worked as a director of sports for Stuttgarter Kickers. Later, he went back to Japan to manage his old club, Urawa Red Diamonds.
As a manager in Japan, he had great success:
- In 2004, he led his team to win the "closing" championship.
- In 2005, his team won the Emperor's Cup.
- In 2006, he achieved a double victory, winning both the J.League Division 1 and the Emperor's Cup.
After his successful time in Japan, Buchwald returned to Germany. He became the manager of Alemannia Aachen in 2007. He later returned to Stuttgarter Kickers in 2010 as a board member. In November 2012, he briefly took over as interim manager before a new coach was appointed.
