Guido Ulrich Buchwald (born on January 24, 1961) is a famous German former professional football player. He played as a defender, which means his job was to stop the other team from scoring goals. He is currently the director of football for Stuttgarter Kickers.
Guido Buchwald is best known for his amazing performance in the final of the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Playing for West Germany against Argentina, he did an incredible job of marking the legendary player Diego Maradona. He stuck to Maradona so closely that he earned the nickname "Diego" himself! His other nickname, 'Bucky', comes from his last name. Throughout his career, he played 76 games for the German national team.

Playing Career: From Stuttgart to World Champion
Guido Buchwald started his professional football journey in 1983 with VfB Stuttgart. He played a huge number of games for this club, appearing in 325 matches in the German Bundesliga and scoring 28 goals.
Winning the World Cup
One of the biggest moments in his career was winning the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. This was a huge achievement for him and his team. Four years earlier, in 1986, he was not chosen for the World Cup team, which was a tough time for him. But he worked hard and became a World Cup winner!
Club Successes
During his time with VfB Stuttgart, the team had some great successes. They won two German championships in 1984 and 1992. In 1992, on the very last day of the season, Guido scored the winning goal against Bayer Leverkusen. This goal secured the championship for Stuttgart with just six minutes left in the game!
Playing in Japan
In 1994, Guido Buchwald moved to Japan to play for the team Urawa Red Diamonds. He played there for several years before returning to Germany in 1998. He joined Karlsruher SC to try and help them avoid being moved down to a lower league. Unfortunately, he couldn't save the team that season. After playing one more season in the second division, he retired from playing football.
Life After Playing: Coaching and Management
After retiring as a player, Guido Buchwald continued to be involved in football. He first worked as a director of sports for Stuttgarter Kickers.
Coaching in Japan
He then went back to Japan to manage his old club, Urawa Red Diamonds. He was very successful as a coach there!

- In 2006, they had an amazing year, winning both the J-League title and the Emperor's Cup.
Returning to Germany
After his successful coaching period in Japan, Buchwald returned to Germany. He became the manager of Alemannia Aachen in 2007. Later, in 2010, he rejoined Stuttgarter Kickers as a board member. He even took over as interim manager for a short time in November 2012.
