Corneille (born Cornelis Guillaume van Beverloo; July 3, 1922 – September 5, 2010) was a famous Dutch artist. He was known for his colorful and imaginative paintings.

Corneille was born in Liège, Belgium. His parents were Dutch. When he was 12 years old, his family moved back to the Netherlands. He later studied art at the Academy of Art in Amsterdam.

Starting New Art Movements

Corneille was a very active artist. In 1948, he helped start the REFLEX movement. Just one year later, in 1949, he was also one of the founders of the COBRA movement. This art group had a big impact on Scandinavian art.

Corneille did more than just paint within the COBRA group. He also wrote and published poetry in the Cobra magazine. He was also a co-founder of the Experimentele Groep in Holland [nl], another art group.

Inspiration and Style

Corneille found inspiration in many places. He was especially influenced by the drawings made by children. He believed it was important for art to connect with what children experience.

He even supported a project called "Art Lending for Children." This project helped children get access to art. Corneille encouraged other artists, like Shinkichi Tajiri, to support it too.

After the COBRA group ended in 1951, Corneille moved to Paris, France. There, he started collecting African art. These artworks began to show up in his own paintings. His style became more imaginative. He painted landscapes that looked like they were seen from a bird's eye view. He also painted exotic birds and unique, stylized shapes.

His artwork can be found in important collections, such as the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.

Later Life and Exhibitions

Corneille lived and worked in Paris until he passed away. He also visited Israel and worked with the Jaffa Atelier there.

On September 24, 2003, an exhibition of his prints opened. This show was held at the Ramat Gan Museum of Israeli Art in Israel. Corneille died in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, in 2010.
