Guillermo Varela Olivera is a professional footballer from Uruguay. He was born on March 24, 1993. Guillermo plays as a right-back for the Brazilian club Flamengo. He also plays for the Uruguay national team.
Guillermo started his football journey with Peñarol in his hometown of Montevideo. In 2013, he moved to the famous English club Manchester United. He also played on loan for Real Madrid's reserve team, Real Madrid Castilla, and for Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany.
After his time in Europe, Varela returned to Peñarol in 2017. He helped them win two Uruguayan Primera División titles. In 2019, he joined Copenhagen in Denmark and won the 2018–19 Danish Superliga with them. Later, he played for Dynamo Moscow in Russia before moving to Flamengo in Brazil in 2022.
Guillermo Varela also played for Uruguay's under-20 team. They finished second in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup. He made his debut for the senior national team in 2017. He has represented Uruguay in two FIFA World Cups, in 2018 and 2022.

Starting at Peñarol
Guillermo was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He began his football career at his local club, Peñarol. He played his first senior game for Peñarol on June 5, 2011. This was in a match against Racing Club de Montevideo.
Time at Manchester United
In May 2013, Varela got a chance to try out for Manchester United. He had played very well in a youth tournament. On June 11, Manchester United officially signed him. He was the very first player signed by their new manager, David Moyes.
Loan to Real Madrid Castilla
In September 2014, Varela went on loan to Real Madrid Castilla. This is the reserve team for the famous Real Madrid club in Spain. He played 33 games for them and scored one goal. This goal came in a 4–0 win against Barakaldo in February 2015.
Back at Manchester United and Loan to Eintracht Frankfurt
After his loan, Varela returned to Manchester United. He played his first game for the senior team on December 5, 2015. It was a Premier League match against West Ham United. A few days later, he played his first Champions League game against Wolfsburg.
In February 2016, he helped Marcus Rashford score a goal in a Europa League match. He also scored an important goal for Manchester United's Under-21 team. This goal helped them win the U21 Premier League title in 2016.
In 2016, José Mourinho became the new manager for Manchester United. Varela then went on a season-long loan to Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany. However, his time there ended early. He had a problem with a tattoo that got infected, which caused issues with the club.
Return to Peñarol
On August 12, 2017, Varela went back to his old club, Peñarol, permanently. He played his first game back on August 20, 2017. Peñarol won that match 4–0 against El Tanque Sisley.
Playing for FC Copenhagen
In January 2019, Varela moved to Denmark. He joined the Danish Superliga team FC Copenhagen. He signed a contract to play for them until June 2023.
Time at Dynamo Moscow
On October 17, 2020, Guillermo joined Russian Premier League club FC Dynamo Moscow on loan. This loan was for the 2020–21 season. In July 2021, he officially signed a permanent two-year contract with Dynamo Moscow. The fans even voted him player of the month in October 2021!
Joining Flamengo
On July 30, 2022, Varela moved to Brazil. He joined the club Flamengo on loan from Dynamo Moscow. This loan was set to last until May 31, 2023. On January 12, 2023, Flamengo announced that Varela would join them permanently. This permanent deal started after his contract with Dynamo Moscow ended in July 2023.

Guillermo Varela has proudly represented his home country, Uruguay, in many international football matches.
Youth National Team
Varela played 29 games for the Uruguay under-20 team. He was part of the team that played in the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup. In that tournament, Uruguay finished as the runners-up, losing to France in the final.
Senior National Team
In March 2016, Varela was called up to the Uruguay senior squad for the first time. This was for World Cup qualifying matches.
In June 2018, Varela was chosen to be in Uruguay's 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He also played for Uruguay in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He came on as a substitute in Uruguay's first game of the tournament against South Korea.
