The 1929 Tornado
On April 10, 1929, a powerful tornado hit Guion. It also affected areas between Guion and Mount Pleasant, Arkansas. The tornado crossed the White River and "completely demolished" the town. Guion had nearly 400 residents and 150 buildings at that time.
Some residents saw the storm coming over a hill to the south. This gave them about five minutes to find shelter. Many people went into storm shelters, caves, or other safe spots. Most of the 150 homes and stores were destroyed. Large pieces of wood were even buried deep in the ground by the strong winds. Sadly, at least seven people died, and many others were hurt.
