Firing a handgun

A gunshot is what happens when a firearm is fired. It makes a loud sound and creates a special kind of chemical dust called gunshot residue. The word "gunshot" can also mean an injury caused by a bullet.

When many firearms are fired, it's called gunfire. This word can mean the sound of the guns, the projectiles (bullets) that were fired, or both. For example, if someone says "gunfire came from the next street," it could mean they heard the sounds, or that bullets were shot from there. To be clearer, it's better to say "the sound of gunfire" or "we came under gunfire."

What Makes Gunfire Special?

There are three main things that help us know when a gun has been fired. These also help people find where the sound came from:

  • An optical flash, which is a bright light called a muzzle flash. This happens when the explosive inside the weapon is lit up.
  • A muzzle blast, which is a very loud sound. When a weapon is fired, it creates a sound wave that can be 140 dB or even louder.
  • A "snap" or "crack" sound. This is like a mini sonic boom that happens when a bullet travels through the air faster than the speed of sound.

Sometimes, gunfire sounds can be confused with other loud noises. These can include firework explosions or cars backfiring. The sounds of gunfire can travel further in the direction the bullet is going than in other directions.

In cities, there's more background noise during the day. This can make it harder to hear a gun's muzzle blast. But at night, when it's quieter, the sound can be heard from much further away. Special systems use many audio sensors to help locate gunfire in urban areas. These sensors work together to figure out exactly where the sound came from.

Suppressors

A suppressor is a device that can be attached to the end of a gun barrel. It's sometimes called a "silencer." Its main job is to make the sound of the weapon firing quieter.

However, a suppressor doesn't make a gun completely silent. It mostly reduces the sound of the gas escaping from the end of the barrel. It won't reduce other noises, like the "snap" of a bullet traveling faster than sound. It also doesn't quiet the mechanical sounds of a self-loading gun.
