Guntram the Rich was an important count who lived a long time ago, from about 920 to 973. He was part of a powerful noble family called the Etichonids. Many people believe he was the ancestor of the famous House of Habsburg. The Habsburgs later became one of the most important royal families in Europe.
Guntram's Life and Lands
Guntram was a member of the Etichonids, a very powerful family. This family owned land on both sides of the Upper Rhine river. Guntram himself had lands in areas like Alsace and Breisgau. His lands stretched from the Vosges Mountains to the Kaiserstuhl and the Black Forest.
Many of Guntram's lands were gifts from the king. However, in August 952, Guntram was accused of being disloyal. This happened during a big meeting called an Imperial Diet in Augsburg. Because of this, King Otto the Great took away some of Guntram's lands.
Even after this, Guntram was able to keep some of his important lands. He kept his possessions in Alsace, Breisgau, and near the Aare River and Reuss River.
The Habsburg Connection
Guntram's family regained its political power through his grandsons. One of them was Radbot, Count of Habsburg. Radbot was a count in Klettgau. He founded the Muri Abbey, which became the first burial place for members of the House of Habsburg.
It is thought that Radbot might have also founded Habsburg Castle. This castle became the main home for the House of Habsburg. However, some people believe another person, Werner I, Count of Habsburg, might have founded the castle instead.
An old record from the 11th century, called the Chronology of Muri Abbey, says that Guntram the Rich was the ancestor of the House of Habsburg. Many historians agree with this idea. However, there are still some things we don't know for sure about Guntram and the very early days of the Habsburg family.
